Social stigma, n. “The disapproval of a person based on physical or behavioral characteristics that distinguish them from others.”
“Stigma” is a word most of us have heard, but do we really understand how it affects people? Let me tell you, the impact of social stigma is significant.
One of the most painful things to experience is the trauma of rejection and not being accepted. When people feel shame or judgement from others, they isolate and protect themselves from experiencing that pain again. Not only are the affects difficult to “undo” they can keep someone from getting the help they need.
When we accept people regardless of their circumstances, we become the antidote to social stigma. And here’s the thing: as we begin to relate to someone else’s thoughts and ideas, building a connection with them based on shared experiences, we start to connect with ourselves as well.
Connection is at the heart of everything we do at Reclaiming Lives and Recovery Cafe.
It is through connection that we are born and it’s through connection that we accomplish nearly everything in life. The truth is connection with others is as important as food and water.
Meaningful connections to another person help you develop a solid support system. We see this kind of connection at Recovery Café. There’s a sense of “me too” and a spirit of giving at the Café that draws people in. If you are looking for a place to make connections, come see us! We’d love to meet you.
